Kids making Valentines for hospital patients, nursing home residents

Area kids are hoping to bring some smiles to people needing extra care this Valentine’s Day.

Students from the La Crosse School District are helping create Valentines for patients at Gundersen Health System and area nursing homes this week.

The activity helps teach kids about showing compassion while also lifting the spirits of those receiving the cards.

“Art heals people, both by making it and by getting it, and it’s a very simple thing to give a card to someone who might not be getting anything if they’re in a nursing home,” said Gundersen Health System Healing Arts Coordinator Sue LaCrosse.

About 1800 Valentines were delivered to patients last year. Gundersen hopes to double that amount this year.
