Kennel Cough cases rising locally

ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) – Local veterinarians say cases of kennel cough are on the rise.

The illness is a dog version of bronchitis and causes a hacking cough.

Kennel cough is highly contagious and outbreaks usually happen when many dogs are near each other.

“It comes and goes throughout the course of the year … there was just a big boarding weekend because I think a lot of people were traveling … so we’re seeing a little bit of an uptick,” says Dr. Douglas Kratt, a veterinarian at Central Animal Hospital.

Dr. Kratt says most dogs recover from kennel cough on their own.

He recommends owners get their dogs vaccinated for kennel cough.

You can also ask your boarding facility or dog day-care if they require kennel cough vaccinations for dogs.
