Jennifer Livingston wins Emmy for anti-bullying editorial

WKBT to air hour-long special: 'From Cruelty to Compassion' Oct. 24

Jennifer Livingston, WKBT News 8 This Morning Anchor, won an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy for her editorial that encourages the community to rise above people who bully others and teach their children “to be kind, not critical, and we need to do that by example.”

Livingston won a Regional Emmy in the writer-Commentary/Editorial category.

On October 2, 2012, Livingston presented a 4-minute editorial to be “better than the bullies” on-air after she received a hurtful email. Her words, which emphasized being more compassionate to combat bullying, inspired people from the La Crosse community and around the world.

“We are better than the bullies that will try to take us down,” Livingston said. “To all of the children out there who are lost; who are struggling with your weight, with the color of your skin, your sexual preference, your disability, even the acne on your face…listen to me right now: Do not let your self-worth be defined by bullies. Learn from my experience that the cruel words of one are nothing compared to the shouts of many.”

Shortly after Livingston’s video went viral, she joined others in the community to form the La Crosse County Anti-Bullying Task Force. It’s made up of a wide variety of community leaders, from area schools, to local hospitals and youth organizations.

Those meetings inspired WKBT News 8 to produce an hour-long special, “From Cruelty to Compassion: A Community Conversation.” It will air on October 24 at 6 p.m. on WKBT. The executive producer is News 8’s 6 and 10 Anchor Mike Thompson, Livingston’s husband who posted a message on his Facebook wall that inspired Livingston to present her editorial.

Livingston also won two other Regional Emmy awards. “The La Crosse Blue Stars” won best Arts/Entertainment: Single Story with the help of News 8 Photographers Kirk Arneson and Rob Born. Arneson and Livingston also won an Emmy for “The Running Man”for Best Sports-News Series.
