Importance of renter, home insurance to protect belongings

Tuesday’s fire that destroyed more than a dozen storage units in La Crosse is a good reminder to protect your belongings through renters or homeowners insurance.

State Farm Insurance agent Kerri Bandell said you should check with your insurance provider to see what’s covered by your policy, but if you have coverage on your home or rental your belongings inside a storage unit will also be protected.

“Someone may have $300 worth of stuff in a storage unit, another person might have $100,000 worth of stuff in a storage unit, You want to make sure that you’ve talked to your agent so you have the right coverage for what you have,” Bandell said.

Renters insurance runs about $10 to $15 a month, so investing now can be very cost effective should something happen.
