Ice Shelters need to be removed soon from area waterways
Wisconsin deadline coming March 1st
ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) – Ice shelters need to be off waterways in our area this weekend.
Shelters on the Mississippi River between Minnesota and Wisconsin need to be removed by March 1st.
And the same goes for inland waters *south* of Highway 64, which is just north of Eau Claire.
With temperatures increasing, ice will likely thaw and leaving the structures could cause them to fall into the water.
The rules are in place to keep people safe.
“The standard answer is the ice is never safe, but especially as we get to these spring months and the warmer weather, it becomes far more dangerous to be wandering around out there,” said Wisconsin DNR conservation warden Edward McCann.
In Minnesota, structures in most of the state need to be off lakes by March 2nd.
