Police recover loaded rifle after stolen vehicle crashes into squad car

TOWN OF MADISON, Wis. — Local law enforcement are searching for two people after the suspects crashed into a squad car while fleeing police Monday morning.

Officers with the Town of Madison Police Department responded to the area near South Sunnyvale Lane around 5 a.m. for a report of someone shooting out of a vehicle. Officers with the Monona, Fitchburg and Madison police departments and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office set up in the area to watch potential escape routes.

When officers spotted the suspect vehicle, which had been stolen from Janesville, the suspects crashed into a squad car while trying to escape. After the suspect vehicle hit the squad car near North Sunnyvale Lane, both occupants got out and ran off.

Law enforcement tried finding both suspects with the help of a K-9, but they were unsuccessful.

Police said they found a loaded Ruger 10-22 rifle and two loaded 9 mm magazines inside the vehicle. The driver or passenger may still be armed with a handgun, according to a news release.

Authorities also found casings from a .22-caliber rifle in the area.
