Hunger Task Force hosts Hunger Forum
Meeting highlights community 'safety net'
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The Hunger Task Force held the 2016 Hunger Forum at the La Crosse Public Library on Monday morning.
Representatives from La Crosse, Monroe, Vernon, and Trempealeau County non-profits, businesses, and government met to discuss what they could do to fight hunger in their communities.
Shelly Fortner, the executive director at the Hunger Task Force of La Crosse, says this year’s theme was strengthening the community’s ‘safety net’. Fortner says she’s seen the need to protect vulnerable people in the community rise over the past few years.
“We are all working together day after day to end food insecurity in our area. When we have forums like this and everybody comes together to deal with those issues and discuss those, the community safety net just gets stronger,” said Fortner.
State senator Jennifer Shilling delivered the keynote speech at the Hunger Forum. She addressed the changes that have been made to Wisconsin’s Food Share program over the past year. Fortner also says those changes have made the Hunger Task Force’s goal of helping people in need more difficult.
