Houston County residents sign petition against frac sand mining

Petitioners worry about landscape, proponents say mines will create jobs

Community members are trying to make their voices heard over frac sand mining in Houston County.

Tuesday, they presented the county board with a petition with 450 signatures asking them to ban all frac sand mining.

The petitioners say there’s an ordinance in front of the board that would allow mining to start and five mines are already proposed along highway 16. They’re concerned the mining will destroy the landscape.

“We have a beautiful county to live in. There’s also the big issues of air pollution and water pollution, water quality that are going to be jeopardized,” said Ken Tschumper, an opponent of frac sand mining.

Proponents of sand mining in the area say the work creates jobs and studies aren’t conclusive on the health and environmental concerns.
