Hot 3-point shooting sends Aquinas to State championship game
Aquinas girls basketball set new Division 3 State records for made three-pointers to breeze past Westfield 69-45 and advance to tonight’s state title game.
Jacy Weisbrod went 7-of-9 from downtown to set a new Division 3 girls state record for threes in a game. Aquinas is no stranger to setting records like these; Taylor Theusch set the same record with the same number of threes last year for Division 4.
For this Aquinas team, the win in the semifinals is just the beginning.
“One of the biggest things we talked about when we found out the news that the championship game would be cancelled, I remember talking to Macy Donarski and Bri [Bahr] like ‘we’re going to come back this year and we’re going to do it for the seniors who didn’t get to do it last year,'” Weisbrod said after the game. “So we’re super excited to be in a position to do that now.”
As opposed to past tournaments, this year’s state competition is contained to one day, so the Blugolds have to turn around and play for the title the same day as this semifinal win.
“I mean it’s the state championship. Let’s be honest, we just have to get every last ounce of what you have and that’s the kind of kids that we have here,” head coach Dave Donarski said. “They’ll dig deep, I know that.”
Aquinas will play Lake Mills, a team the Blugolds beat by 15 back in the regular season.
