LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — HorseSense and the Charmant Hotel are partnering again to celebrate the 147th Kentucky Derby — despite COVID-19 — with specialty Mint Julep Cocktail Kits.
The kits, costing $50, include two specialty etched highball glasses commemorating the “Kentucky Derby At Home Watch Party” and ingredients to make two Mint Julep cocktails, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby.
“Just because we aren’t able to gather in person doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the Kentucky Derby together,” said HorseSense executive director Samantha Hall.
“Now the most cherished aspects of  the Derby can be enjoyed anywhere — and better yet,  you’re still able to support your community’s local businesses and nonprofit organizations during a time when it is needed most.”
Proceeds benefit the nonprofit HorseSense, which offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons to youths, adults and military veterans with disabilities at its headquarters in Coon Valley, Wis., and the Charmant  boutique hotel in La Crosse.
Participants can pre-order the limited kits by calling the Charmant at (608) 519-8800. The last day to pre-order a kit will be April 27.
Buyers can collect their kits during the following times in the lounge at the Charmant, at 101 State St. in La Crosse:
● 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 28
● 4-6 p.m. Thursday, April 29
● 4-6 p.m. Friday, April 30.
Also available on those days will be 50/50 cash raffle tickets at $10 apiece. HorseSense will draw the winning ticket at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the facility’s headquarters at W4102 Ober Road in Coon Valley.
The drawing will be available to watch live online via Facebook Live (@horsesensewi). Participants do not need to present at the drawing to win.
As part of the celebration, HorseSense also is sponsoring its second annual Kentucky Derby At Home Watch Party Hat Decorating Contest. Participants should submit a photo of their masterpiece for social media to judge. The photo with the most “likes” on Facebook will win a gift basket from the Charmant, which includes one free night stay among other valued items.
A $10 entry fee is required to participate in the hat contest. Visit HorseSense’s website for more information about the contest and how to register.
