SPARTA, Wis (WKBT) – A local American Legion Post is honoring those who served for our freedoms one final time.

Sparta Post 100 held a memorial service Sunday for veterans who passed.

Post Everlasting is a ceremony for the Post’s Legionnaires that have passed.

Participants in the ceremony wrote the name of their loved one who had died.

The chaplain puts the names of the servicemen in a brazier and is lit, giving people an opportunity to honor their loved ones.

“By honoring them, that makes the families aware that we have not forgotten. And that’s really important,” said Bernie Czarnecki, the Commander of Sparta Post 100.

Last year the event was canceled due to the pandemic, so this year, they honored veterans who had passed from March 2019 to March 2021.
