Homicide, hiding corpse charges filed in Brian Helgeson’s death

Lars Helgeson charged with first degree intentional homicide

Charges have been filed against the Jackson County son accused of killing his father and then burying the body last month on the family’s property on Green Acres Road in the Town of Hixton.

Lars Helgeson, 20, was charged Wednesday with first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.

According to a police report, Helgeson killed his father 57-year-old Brian Helgeson about a week before authorities started investigating. Authorities found Brian’s body on September 25.

Lars shot his father in the hand, back and head with a .22 caliber rifle outside of their house, the criminal complaint states. He doused the scene in gasoline and burned it, then wrapped his father’s remains in a shower curtain before burying him in a jump on the motor cross trail near the house.

In his interview with police, Lars said he felt imprisoned living with his father, they argued all the time and couldn’t handle it anymore.

Lars’ friends Lucas Horstman and Aaron Lowe told police Lars originally told them his dad had gone to Florida. Horstman says Lars later told him that Brian was dead and he shot him and buried him by the motor cross track on the family property.

Horstman told police he and Lowe were with Lars’ home on September 23 when some people showed up at the residence. Lars told them to hide and crawl on the floor, the complaint states.

Lowe told police that Lars never really told him that he killed his dad, but kept saying how “the gods wanted him (Brian) gone.”

Lars appeared in Jackson County Court via video conferencing Wednesday afternoon. No bond was set.  His next court appearance is scheduled for October 14.
