Holmen man arrested after fatal hit-and-run

$100,000 cash bond set for Damien Mracek

A Holmen man wanted in connection with a May 22 deadly hit and run appeared in La Crosse County Court Tuesday afternoon.

Damien Mracek, 31, has been charged with hit and run causing death and a felony bail jumping as a repeat offender.

Mracek turned himself in Monday around 8:30 p.m., according to the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page.

Authorities have been looking for Mracek since a May 22 hit and run in the town of Bangor that killed 75-year-old Darel Skolos of La Crosse.

Police say Mracek was driving on Highway B when he crossed the center line and hit Skolos’ pickup truck head-on and then fled the scene.

Skolos was transported to Gundersen Health System in critical condition, with a hip fracture, spleen injury, broken ribs and other internal injuries, according to the criminal complaint. Skolos died from the injuries sustained in the crash on June 1.

At Tuesday’s court appearance, Mracek interrupted his lawyer to tell the judge how sorry he was.

“If I may, I don’t argue it one bit,” Mracek said. “My sympathy goes out to the family and my condolences to them, and I apologize to this….”

Mracek is being held in the La Crosse County Jail on $100,000 cash bond.
