Holmen High School students honor Hmong veterans

Students at Holmen High School are working on a project to honor our Hmong veterans.

Holmen student, Angel Yang, is painting a new mural to honor Hmong and Laotian veterans who fought to come to America.

The project is inspired by a recently proposed bill that would change Wisconsin’s definition of a veteran.

The bill proposed by Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) would make Hmong Veterans eligible for state benefits.

Students like Mai Kou Thao say this mural is a way to say thank you to those who paved the way for a better life.

“Finally appreciating all the Hmong Veterans that were in the war and fought through those times, and just appreciating what they did for us Hmong people to get here,” siad Thao. “Ua tsaug rau couneeg, Hmoob uas tau pab America… meaning thank you to all the Hmong who have helped get into America.”

An estimated 1,000 Hmong veterans reside in the state of Wisconsin.
