Hixon Forest Epic bike race to be held despite trail damage

Volunteer crews are hard at work to repair the trails in La Crosse’s Hixon Forest and get them ready in time for a major bike race.

The Wisconsin Off Road Series’ Hixon Forest Epic is scheduled to be held in just 10 days, but the trails remain closed because of damage done during last week’s torrential rain.

The storms left the valleys of the forest flooded and uprooted several trees. Volunteers say they were surprised at the amount of damage done in such a short period of time.

“We had the same thing happen back in 2007 and 2008, we didn’t have any trail damage then, which is weird,” said volunteer crew leader Josh Blum. “We didn’t really know what to expect, with knowing that we’ve not been damaged in the past, and seeing what we got damaged was pretty interesting.”

Despite the trail damage, the bike race will go on as scheduled on August 6th. A new course that avoids the heavily damaged parts of the trails was approved by race directors this morning.
