Health officials standing by to answer coronavirus questions

Health experts want people to avoid using 911 for coronavirus questions

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – A lot is changing and many of you have questions about these changes. Some people have been using 911 as a source for information but emergency officials say it should only be used for emergencies.

In times of uncertainty, fear is a common feeling many of us have. We have questions when we cannot see the whole picture.

“There has been a lot of change,” said Jen Rombalski at the daily La Crosse County press briefing Wednesday. “Change in it of itself can be very stressful.”

There are reports around the nation and Wisconsin of people using dispatch in order to get answers.

However, that number is for life and death situations. There are other contacts set up to help people out.

“If you have any kind of general question One of the first places you can go would be to our call center which is 608-785-6240,” Rombalski said.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office posted a statement to their Facebook page about getting numerous questions from local residents.

Sheriff John Spears said in the statement, “Unfortunately, I do not have all the answers at this time as we were given the order at the same time all of you received it and are still working actively to fully understand the intended scope.”

A lot of people are confused about Gov. Tony Evers’ new safer at home order. Spears clarified saying, “We are not under ‘Martial Law’. You will not be stopped without reasonable suspicion that a violation of the law has occurred. This is the same standard that existed prior to this order.”

County health departments are set up to help answer questions in this uncomfortable new norm.

“If it’s a general question we would not want to call 911,” Rombalski said. “We would want to reserve that for the most severe situations for 911 response.”
