Health experts: Face masks can help reduce seasonal allergies
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- While wearing a mask isn’t ideal, it does have some benefits other than slowing the spread of COVID-19.
Health experts say face masks can help some people with their seasonal allergies.
The masks can be good at filtering out pollen and allergens in the air.
Some masks may be more effective than others for allergy sufferers.
“The surgical masks especially filter out the smaller particles in the air and actually a lot of the allergens in the air are bigger than the size the mask would filter out so yes any airborne allergen might help certain individuals who are allergic to pollens,” said Dr. Erin Morcomb of Mayo Clinic Health System’s Family Medicine Department.
Dr. Morcomb says cloth masks can also be effective, but they might not filter out smaller particles to the same extent as a surgical mask.
And keep in mind, for people with eye allergies, masks won’t have much of an effect.
