Groundhog biting incident prompts PETA to send letter to city
Jimmy the Groundhog bites mayor during prognostication
MADISON, Wis. — PETA sent a letter to Sun Prairie officials asking that future events be groundhog-free after Jimmy the Groundhog bit Mayor Jon Freund’s ear during a Monday event.
Sun Prairie’s 67th Groundhogs Day Celebration not only included Jimmy’s prognostication, but also the incident with Freund.
“Biting indicates immense stress and fear in groundhogs – the event was clearly no fun for the animal, and in fact, he likely bit the mayor in a desperate attempt to flee,” PETA’s letter to the city said. “Regardless of the intent of this wildlife exhibit, the message conveyed to the public is irresponsible and condones the inhumane mistreatment of animals.”
City of Sun Prairie officials pardoned Jimmy the Groundhog for the biting incident and honored his service to the city at a city council meeting Tuesday night.
