Great Rivers United Way invests $158K to boost affordable housing

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Great Rivers United Way is making a big investment in the affordable housing market.

The La Crosse area nonprofit is giving more than $158,000 to organizations that generate safe and affordable housing.

Independent Living Resources, a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities find sustainable housing, received $16,000 during the presentation Thursday at The Salvation Army of La Crosse County.

The money will go toward its homeless prevention and intervention program.

“People with disabilities have an extremely high incidence of poverty and homelessness,” said Sadie Nelson, coordinator of Independent Living Resources. “And so, a lot of the people that are currently in the La Crosse area do have a disability of some sort.”

United Way also awarded grants to four other local organizations.
