Governor Walker emphasizes work zone safety to drivers
This is Work Zone Awareness Week
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Wisconsin’s Governor is promoting highway safety this week through a state-wide proclamation.
Governor Scott Walker declared this first week of April as Work Zone Awareness Week. Walker hopes to address the thousands of crashes in Wisconsin work zones within the last three years.
Local highway officials say a driver’s actions are often a matter of life and death.
“There are people, just like themselves, that are working in close proximity to that traffic. We want those people to go home at night to be with their families, and we want to motoring public to be able to get to their destination and ultimately go home at night,” said La Crosse County Highway Commissioner Ron Chamberlain.
The Wisconsin DOT will use social media, radio and television, and electronic signs along highways to remind drivers to slow down and pay attention on highways.
