GMC gymnastics co-op punches ticket to state meet

G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro/Cochrane-Fountain City (GMC) gymnastics are heading to the team state gymnastics meet for the seventh time in program history.

GMC won a talented River Falls sectional over the hosts and the West Salem co-op by mere points. Second-year head coach Kelly Pfennig said the girls almost couldn’t believe it themselves when they took first on the podium.

This year’s team introduced talented underclassmen to the ranks, including freshman Abby Miller, who placed second in the all-around at sectionals. Miller’s dominant debut season paired with talented teammates like Sophie White, Lauren Koss, Trista Thill, and Paris Lambert, means the team has plenty of scoring depth.

“A lot of our team is underclassmen,” White said, “so they didn’t know what high school gymnastics is. Everyone had to mature, and there’s just been a lot of growth from everyone.”

Teammates say Miller in particular has the maturity and leadership of someone much older than she actually is.

“Abby looks like she’s been on the team for years,” senior Lauren Koss said. “She knows how to handle the pressure really well, and Sophie’s an amazing leader.”

“It was really exciting that we had that kind of talent coming on to our team. [Abby] has really been solid for us all year long,” Pfennig said of Miller.

That respect level goes both ways.

“They’ve always just been super supportive no matter what, through all the mental blocks,” Miller said of her teammates. “Through everything, they’ve always been there.”

The team competition begins at 1 pm Friday at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln. Individual competition is Saturday.
