Generous donation allows local school food pantry to continue
The Hamilton Elementary pantry supplies food for approximately 70 local families each month.
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Wettstein’s in downtown La Crosse has generously donated a refrigerator to the Hamilton Elementary School food pantry.
The previous refrigerator stopped working just before the start of the 2015-16 school year.
The Hamilton food pantry opened twelve years ago through the La Crosse Community Foundation’s Jim’s Grocery Bag fund, an endowment fund set up in the memory of the late local attorney Jim Gokey.
The fund provides annual financial support to the School District of La Crosse food pantries and school lunch program.
The Hamilton pantry supplies bags of groceries to approximately 70 local families each month.
The refrigerator will allow the pantry to continue to offer items like yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, and milk.
The pantries provide important resources to many students in the district whose families might be struggling to put adequate food on the table.
“The front lines are at the schools and often we see a kid who’s hungry,” said Hamilton Elementary School principal Steve Michaels. “We all want to help and do our best to make our community a better place. The pantry is a way to do that. It’s just one of the community-focused activities that serve as an extension of the lessons of generosity, community, and compassion taught in our classrooms.”
