Freshmen Thompson, Steien dominating early for Blair-Taylor girls basketball

Blair-Taylor basketball is about a young as varsity team as you can get, with two seniors and just four returners with varsity experience.
But age matters not for the Wildcats, because two freshmen are leading a charge that’s resulted in a 7-2 start.

Abby Thompson and Lindsay Steien are the top two scorers for the Wildcats, with Thompson putting up 18 a game and Steien adding 15.

Thompson is regarded as one of the best sharpshooters in the area. In her her first varsity game, she nailed 7 threes and is currently hitting 42 percent of her triples, while Steien has become a leader at one of the most crucial spots on the floor.

“[Thompson] come off very strong behind the arc,” Waldera said. “Her three-point shooting percentage is very good right now, and then she’s got a good inside-outside game that’s starting to develop. She’s defintiely a scorer. Lindsay is coming in and she’s controlling the point, which is very different for us, because typically we don’t have a true point guard. She’s got a lot of talent. She’s left-handed, and I think it challenges the other teams to play against a really talented dribbler.”

“It’s pretty crazy,” Thompson said about jumping into varsity this young, “but [Steien and I] have been playing together forever, so we know where each other are going to be, and it’s just easy.”

With Steien at point, Waldera says he isn’t worried about turnovers because Steien takes such good care of the basketball, and with Thompson, Coach says he wants her to shoot more. The Wildcats say they do have areas to work on to reach their full potential: one is free throws, and the second is defending taller teams.

“We really need to play bigger than we are,” he said. “We have the capability of doing that, but I think we take a break here and there and let our rebounds get away from us.”

The Wildcats improved to 7-2 Tuesday with a 78-46 win over Whitehall.
