Franciscan Sisters contribute to La Crosse’s The Good Fight

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)  — The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration donated $99,560 to The Good Fight Community Center on Wednesday, an investment in children in the community.

With 273 kids actively enrolled, The Good Fight has activities, mentorship and development opportunities for at-risk and disadvantaged youth ages 10-18. The Good Fight plans to spend the money on paid staff and, for some kids, center membership costs.

“Children are our future, right?” said FSPA Sister Laura Nettles. “We need to work with our children to build a successful and healthy community foundation.”

This grant will help build that foundation as well.

“These students come with stories that are sometimes hard to believe, but at the same time are crucial to understand and to see that not only are they in a space where they need supporters—but they need a network of supporters,” said Isaiah Thomas, executive director of The Good Fight.

Thomas believes this grant will help give kids the consistency they need but might not be getting at home.

He also wants kids to come to the center without their parents’ worrying about its cost.

“You don’t ever have to worry about whether or not your mom or dad or your parent or guardian has the ability to pay for your time here,” Thomas said.

Thirteen-year-old Madison Mulroy directly sees the benefits of The Good Fight. There, she can practice boxing, learn new skills and hang out with friends.

“I like being able to let out my energy without getting in trouble for it—and I feel like it’s fun, too,” Mulroy said.

The FSPA grant is part of the order’s “Seeding a Legacy of Healing” program. It redirects proceeds from the Mayo Clinic Health System sale toward partnerships that address social justice issues. The sisters committed to investing more than $6 million for 23 different partners.

The Good Fight Community Center has been supporting youth in the area since 2016. More information about getting involved in the club can be found on their website.
