Former ambassador to China visits UW-La Crosse to speak to students

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The war in Ukraine is putting a spotlight on foreign relations.

Students at UW-La Crosse had the opportunity to hear how important those relationships are from the former U.S. Ambassador to The People’s Republic of China.

Gary Locke served as an ambassador for three years under President Obama, from 2011 to 2014.

He also served as the Governor of the state of Washington and as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

Locke says, in a time of challenging foreign relations, there is common ground between the United States and China.

“Tensions are very, very high between the United States and China, but nonetheless, the United States and China are still cooperating in a whole host of efforts,” said Locke. “We need to really focus on those areas of common interest, respect our differences, but we need to be, also, forthright about our concerns about human rights.”

Today’s lecture was sponsored by the Tommy G Thompson Center on Public Leadership.
