Flood insurance credit could be dropped for La Crosse homeowners

City officials are responding to issues raised by FEMA

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The price of flood insurance for City of La Crosse homeowners may be rising.

FEMA informed the city it may not be in compliance with the national flood insurance program.

The City is working a response.

If FEMA doesn’t accept the city’s plan, homeowners could pay the price.

“We get a ten percent rate discount, because we do things to help prevent flooding. If our program doesn’t do those things, we don’t get that credit. Right now they’re suggesting that we may be losing that ten percent credit,” said City of La Crosse utility manager Bernard Lenz.

Most homeowners have a federally subsidized flood insurance policy.
