Five apply for Sparta School Board seat vacated when Solberg resigned under mask pressure

Sparta Area School District to resume classes; police determine ‘no direct threat’ to safety

SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) — The Sparta Area School District, roiled with arguments over a mask mandate for students that contributed to the resignation of a school board member, received five applications for that vacant seat.

Applications were received from the following individuals, in the order that the applications were received, according to a school district news release:

  • Kelly Anderson
  • John Hendricks
  • Anthony Scholze
  • Patrick J. McKenna
  • Misty Morales.

Interviews will start at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, with the location to be announced next week.

Eric Solberg, who was elected to the board in April 2020, resigned in mid-September after irate parents targeted him and board member Nancy Sikorski for recall elections because of a 4-2 board vote on Sept. 8 to reinstate the district’s mask mandate.

Several board meetings in recent weeks have been contentious because of the mandate, mirroring situations in other districts throughout the nation.
