First case of the Omicron variant detected in Wisconsin
(WKBT) – The first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in Wisconsin, according to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
Health officials say the resident who tested positive for the virus recently traveled to South Africa.
Governor Tony Evers says he is urging all eligible Wisconsin residents to get vaccinated and receive a booster dose as soon as possible.
“We’ve been prepared for this news and will continue trusting the science to help keep Wisconsinites and our communities healthy and safe,” Governor Tony Evers said in a statement. “Now is the time to double down on our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, including the Omicron variant.”
The World Health Organization first designated the Omicron variant as a variant of concern on November 26.
