FDA approves fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine for Americans 50 and older

FDA rules without input from its independent advisers

UNDATED (WKBT) – Americans 50 and older are now eligible for a fourth dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

The FDA made the ruling Tuesday morning.

People in that age group can get their fourth shot four months after receiving their 3rd.

With COVID-19 cases currently low, it’s not clear if they should rush out and get one.

“It’s an attempt to say, ‘We have vaccine available.’ This is a population that could benefit from additional vaccine and how do we move forward with that,” said Bridget Pfaff, clinical operations director at Gundersen Health System.

Evidence is limited on the benefit another booster offers.
