Family serves others after receiving Thanksgiving meal
(WKBT) LA CROSSE, Wis. — Many who were unable to join in the festivities at the La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner were able to have a meal delivered to their doorstep. One family from West Salem knows first-hand how valuable a nice meal can be when you need it the most.
This is the fifth time the Browne family has helped out during the annual event.
They’re some of the many volunteers waiting to pick up their route information slips and prepared meals. Once they loaded up the minivan, they headed to the first stop of the day.
Many residents at the first were inside, eagerly waiting for their food. Because there were so many meals to be sent out, the deliveries were a little bit behind schedule.
While there are a lot of helping hands, they don’t have time to visit with the people who made the meal request. One of the first years they were out on the road, an elderly man invited them in for cookies and coffee.
“He was our first stop, so we had a bunch of food in the car and had to keep delivering,” Amy Browne said.
It’s these memorable experiences that keep the family coming back for more. One of the recipients they met today didn’t order the meal – instead, her niece must have set up the exchange.
The Browne family knows what it’s like to be on the other side. When their son Joe was in the hospital, they received a Thanksgiving meal.
So now, they understand that not everyone can travel to see family or get a good meal.
“There’s people out there that you kinda take for granted, being able to go spend time with family,” Bill Browne said.
Bill recommends the experience and says it’s really a win-win situation for all involved.
“It’s really a good feeling to be able to, you know, contribute in a way and be helpful,” Bill said.
The organization accepts monetary donations year-round in order to provide the meal. More information can be found at laxthanksgivingdinner.com.
