Experts: Wait at least 5 days after Thanksgiving to be tested for COVID-19
Samples collected early in your infection can give a false negative
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- If you went to or hosted a Thanksgiving get together, and you’re feeling healthy, experts say there is no rush to get a COVID-19 test.
The experts at Gundersen Health System say if you’re Coronavirus symptom free, you should wait at least five days after Thanksgiving or whenever you celebrated with others, to be tested.
According to the CDC, it is possible to test negative if the sample is collected early in your infection and then test positive later during the illness. Medical professionals suggest you self isolate until you are tested and until you get your results.
Even if you think you took precautions to celebrate safely, experts say you should still get tested. “For others’ safety, would be my answer. We really have to think about more than just ourselves. That’s how we are going to get control of this virus; thinking of others”, explains Gundersen Health System Clinical Lab manager Cheryl Peters.
If you are having any COVID-19 symptoms– don’t wait. Contact your health care provider right away to schedule a test.
