Employers look to fill hundreds of openings at Coulee Region Job Fair

There are hundreds of job openings in the La Crosse area, and local businesses had a chance to recruit some new hires on Thursday.

The Department of Workforce Development and other area workforce organizations held the Coulee Region Job Fair at the Omni Center.

More than 60 employers were at the fair, hoping to fill more than 550 job openings, ranging from entry level to advanced positions.

Organizers say the role of job fairs has changed in recent years due to low unemployment rates. Now, there are more employers trying to impress prospective employees.

“In Wisconsin, we have relatively high workforce participation rate, and our unemployment rate is low, especially in Western Wisconsin, so it has definitely become more of a job-seekers’ market,” said Kathleen Olson of the Wisconsin Job Service.

Recent estimates from the Department of Workforce Development have La Crosse County’s unemployment rate at 2.9 percent. That’s below the state average of 3.4 percent and the national average of 4.4 percent.
