Elroy-Sparta bike trail kicks off 50th year

Ceremony held for start of spring biking season

One of Western Wisconsin’s most well-known bike trails is now open for the season.

The Elroy-Sparta bike trail opened for the spring biking season Friday morning.

The trail is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It was originally a railroad track before being converted into a bike trail.

An estimated 15,000 people use the trail every year, generating more than a million dollars in tourism revenue for the city of Sparta.

What draws so many people to the trail?

“It’s freedom,” said bicyclist Charmaine Trewyn. “It’s freedom to just enjoy nature, enjoy the exercise…the sights. Going through the tunnel, it’s beautiful.”

There will be a 50th anniversary celebration for the trail on June 6th.
