Dry & Warmer To Start 2020

Tuesday’s High: 29F / Tonight’s Low: 16F – Last Updated Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 8:45 AM…

After record warmth for some Sunday, winter made a return to the region Monday. Snow fell across the region for much of the day and into last night… then tapered between midnight and 2 a.m. from north to south. As expected, the highest snow totals occurred across northern parts of the viewing area… where reports ranged from 4″ to 9″. The official report at the La Crosse airport was 2.3″ of snow, but 4.7″ fell on the ridge top above the city up near Grandad Bluff.

Clouds will linger across the region this morning, then partial clearing is possible this afternoon. It will be dry today, but breezy and a bit colder with highs in the mid-upper 20s to low 30s. Winds will be from the NW 10-20 mph, with gusts of 25-30 mph possible this morning. This will cause wind chills in the single digits and teens this morning.

Partly cloudy and dry tonight for New Year’s Eve. It will be seasonably chilly with lows in the upper single digits to low teens (north) to upper teens to low 20s (south). The low in La Crosse will be around 16F, with the midnight temp around 18F. Winds will diminish into the 5-10 mph range from the south overnight.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Forecast for La Crosse

It will be dry and warmer to kick off 2020 with a mix of sun and clouds. Expect highs in the low-mid 30s (north) to low 40s (south). Highs in the La Crosse area will likely be in the upper 30s to near 40F.

Looking Ahead… Mostly cloudy Thursday with highs around 40F. A storm system could clip the region Thursday night into Friday as it tracks by to our southeast. Some forecast models track it farther south, so precipitation chances around here are slim. Other models track it farther north and would bring a decent chance of snow or a wintry mix to our area. For now, I’ll include at least a slight chance of snow or mix Thursday night and Friday… but be sure to stay tuned for updates as we hopefully get more “agreeable” model data. Highs Friday will cool back into the low-mid 30s.

Saturday is looking dry at this point, but colder with highs in the mid-upper 20s. Skies will be mostly to partly cloudy. A weak disturbance could bring a slight chance of light snow showers or flurries to parts of the area on Sunday and/or Monday. Highs Sunday will be in the low 30s, then around 30F on Monday.

Mostly cloudy next Tuesday with colder highs in the mid 20s. Partly sunny Wednesday with highs back near 30F.

Enjoy your Tuesday and have a safe and Happy New Year’s Eve! -Bill Graul
