Dragon boat paddler heading to international competition
LA CROSSE, Wis, (WKBT) — A dragon boat paddler from Trempealeau is preparing to race in an another international competition.
Sue Karpinski previously competed with the US National Team in China, but that was in open water.
This is her first time competing in the International World Club Crew Ice Dragon Boat Championships.
Karpinski will be in the same kind of dragon boat you might see racing down the Mississippi River in the summer, but on skis and with a very different kind of paddle.
“It’s a stick that has spikes on the end with a flat shield. Once you pound the stick on the ice, the shield is on a spring, it pops up, the spikes go into the ice and then you use that as leverage to pull the boat forward,” Karpinski explained.
She is hoping to place in the top three out of 125 teams. The championship will take place on February 8th and 9th in Ottawa.
