Donation effort underway to support Afghan students at Fort McCoy

Great Rivers United Way is teaming up with La Crosse School District and three institutions of higher learning

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Community organizations are coming together to help the nearly 2,000 Afghan children and youths at Fort McCoy.

Great Rivers United Way is teaming up with La Crosse’s three institutions of higher learning and the La Crosse School District to launch a school supply drive.

A wish list of items is available online.

Those items will be sent directly to Fort McCoy.

Organizers say even small item can have a big impact.

“He showed a pencil, just a little pencil he had been using it so much. And he said ‘I’m a real American student,'” said Laura Nettles, Viterbo University’s executive director for Mission and Social Justice. “The supplies that we give, the way that we can reach out and the way that we provide some normalcy means so much to the kids.”

You can find the list here.
