Doctors say waiting rooms getting busy as year comes to close

Patients looking to take advantage of deductibles

If you’ve tried to schedule a doctor’s appointment recently, you know it’s a busy time of year for healthcare.

Officials at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse say December is typically one of the busiest months of the year for them, and this year they’re seeing more hospital admissions and surgeries than ever before.

Executive Vice President Michael Dolan, M.D. says that has a lot to do with insurance deductibles — with many people reaching or getting close to their deductibles during the last couple months of the year, they may decide to go through with procedures they’ve been putting off.

“A lot of people want to time those semi-elective and elective things to this time of the year, where they have less out of pocket cost, so I think we see that without question,” said Dr. Dolan.

Doctors say waiting rooms are also busier this time of year due to it being the middle of flu season, and parents wanting to get things like wisdom teeth taken care of for their kids during holiday break.
