Doctors are excited for new virtual exam room coming to Winona Health
WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) — — People in Winona will soon be able to visit the doctor right from the comfort of their home.
Winona Health just launched a virtual exam room where patients can get a medical diagnosis and prescription online.
Winona Health says SmartExam is simple and fast to use.
People can pick up any smartphone, tablet or computer, answer 10 to 15 minutes’ worth of questions and within an hour, you should have a diagnosis.
Chris Watras, an ER physician with Winona Health, said, “This was not something that I anticipated a change like this coming when I was in medical school.”
Watras said SmartExam could revolutionize how patients receive medical care.
“Sometimes you may have to wait up to a week or so to be able to get in to see your doctor or, if you come into urgent care, sometimes there’s a long wait,” Watras said.
The platform, would reduce wait times, and provide greater medical access to patients who either can’t or don’t want to leave their house.
“This is great on days like this in Minnesota where it’s snowing and it’s difficult to get out of your house,” Watras said.
People will still have to see the doctor in person for serious conditions, but for smaller medical problems, the platform works great Watras said.
“Cough, flu, that sort of stuff. We can also provide care for rashes and care for children,” Watras said.
Jessica Remington, the director of Health and Wellness Services at Winona Health, said SmartExam is also great for more personal medical issues.
“Acne, birth control, UTI, yeast infection, I think it’s going to be great for our patients and our community. It’s a quick, easy way to get care from home or anywhere at a really lowcost point,” Remington said.
The platform just launched on Wednesday but, so far, Winona Health said things are going great.
“Very excited. Today’s our first day we’ve actually had some patients already go through and it’s worked very well both from the standpoints of the patient and of the provider,” Watras said.

It costs $20 per exam for the first month and after that, it will cost $39 per exam.
If doctors can’t give you a diagnosis online you don’t have to pay.
Right now, only people in Minnesota can use SmartExam but Winona Health is hoping to soon make it available for patients in Wisconsin as well.
