Diocese of La Crosse to name clergy involved in substantiated child sexual abuse allegations

Former Winona Diocese priest to be deported

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)– The Diocese of La Crosse will release a list of clergy involved in substantiated allegations of child sexual abuse Saturday. It plans on releasing the list and other information on the diocesan website, as well as reading a letter from Bishop William Patrick Callahan addressing the issue during all weekend Masses.

News 8 Now’s Martha Koloski requested this information multiple times from the diocese starting in May 2019.  In an email response in November, a church spokesperson said that it recently completed an independent audit of its files and procedures concerning any accusation of sexual abuse of a minor by clergy. Jack Felsheim, the Director of Communications and Public Relations, said at the time that the diocese was taking the final steps to release the information in the next few months.

According to a press release, a letter from Bishop Callahan will be read at all weekend Masses throughout the 19 county dioceses. His comments will be available, along with the information, at diolc.org/protect-and-heal.

The list, created by the independent audit firm Defenbaugh & Associates, Inc., used clergy files dating back to 1868.
