Despite being virtual, Maple Leaf Walk Run gives people something to look forward to

Plus, you still get a t-shirt!

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – People are still able to take part in a popular annual event.

The La Crosse Area YMCA’s Maple Leaf Walk Run is going virtual this year.

Instead of cruising down the usual Oktoberfest route, you have a week to run or walk where ever you want.

You can sign up for the 5K, 5 mile, or half marathon.

Kids can even get in on the fun by signing up for the Maple Mile.

There are also some activities you can do to make your experience even more memorable:

  • Take part in our Maple Leaf Scavenger Hunt
  • Decorate your own bib – submit via social media to win a prize
  • Join our Virtual Beginner 5K Program, offered by Grand Bluff Training
  • Submit your time online for a chance to win a prize

Plus, you still get a t-shirt!

One organizer says this event gives people something special to look forward to.

“Hosting an event like this, even though it is virtual, gives people something to train for. Something to strive for. And they still feel that sense of community. Signing up for the race, coming here to get their t-shirt, participating and engaging with us socially through photos and other ways,” said Travis Pernsteiner, event organizer.

Pernsteiner says there are already a little over 300 people taking part!

The walk-run kicked off last Saturday and wraps up this Saturday, Sept. 26th.
