Des Moines woman charged with extortion
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A 48-year-old Des Moines woman has been charged with extortion, accused of faking the kidnapping of another person.
The Des Moines Register is reporting that Dee Dee Negrete (neh-GREHT’-ee) was arrested Monday. Polk County jail records say she has since left custody.
Police say the scheme was carried out on Feb. 12, when Negrete and a man told 55-year-old Kevin Bishop, of Des Moines, that his live-in girlfriend had been kidnapped and that the kidnapper wanted $500 ransom. Police have not released the man’s name.
Police say Bishop gave Negrete and the man some money, and they left. The girlfriend returned later that day. Bishop soon learned that she hadn’t been kidnapped.
A phone listing for Negrete could not be found. Her public defender did not immediately return a call Wednesday.
