Demand for childcare workers already impacting La Crosse childcare centers
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A growing shortage of child care workers could end up impacting your family.
The Parenting Place of La Crosse, which oversees at-home childcare providers in La Crosse and surrounding counties, says there are a few reasons for the shortage across the state.
One of the biggest is the low pay and lack of benefits at many child care centers, and many of those centers also require a 4 year degree in Early Childhood. On top of that, school districts hire the same kinds of workers, but for higher pay and better benefits.
A fix isn’t easy though as many families are unable to pay the higher rates that would be required to increase the pay for child care workers.
“It’s going to take a combination of strategies, maybe public, private, to figure this out because the bottom line is our youngest children in our community, they deserve loving, safe, quality care,” said The Parenting Place Executive Director Jodi Widuch.
The Parenting Place says the first step in finding a solution is raising awareness for the growing issue.
