Deke Slayton Airfest to take off June 12 and 13 at La Crosse Regional Airport


LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The Deke Slayton Airfest has posted a “save-the-date” notice on its Facebook page that it will take place from 8 a.m. June 12 to 10 p.m. June 13 at the La Crosse Regional Airport.
The event will feature the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, in new planes —F/A-18E/F Super Hornets — with additional details to be announced soon.
Slayton, who was born in Sparta, Wis., was one of America’s original Mercury Seven astronauts. He is memorialized at the Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bike Museum in Sparta.
Slayton also flew on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program, a joint U.S.-Russian space mission, in 1975.
Slayton died of cancer at his home in League City, Texas, on June 13, 1993, at the age of 69.
