De Soto football gets long-awaited chance to start their season
DE SOTO, Wis. (WKBT)– Every team that’s hitting the gridiron tonight has had to jump a few hurdles to be able to play this season.
But few if any have had to deal with as many of those hurdles as the De Soto football team.
The Pirates are finally ready for their 2020 season to start.
The team originally planned to kick off two weeks ago, but some players had to quarantine, and they did not have enough to play a game.
The team has 20 players on the roster, and with the several players out due to COVID-19 concerns they had to wait for their return.
Those players that quarantined couldn’t practice, and had to work out individually while hearing from coach on the playbook.
Having to wait has been difficult on the team and coach, but the guys have kept a positive attitude throughout.
“It was frustrating, because you’re jealous of those guys and especially the kids, we’ve had many many weeks of practice and no opportunity to play so it’s been harder for the kids to watch and harder for the coach too because we want to be out there and compete too,” said Coach Ev Wick.
“They’re upset but there was nobody to blame you can’t control that so I know all of us were upset, but we’re just glad to be able to play this season,” said Senior Jacob Kurszewski.
They’re squaring off with the knights of Luther at home tonight, and you can catch highlights of that match-up tonight on our News 8 Now Highlight Zone.
