Dance for Hope brings attention to suicide awareness
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Members of our community are using dance to promote suicide awareness. The La Crosse Area Suicide Prevention Initiative held its Dance for Hope at the new student union building at UW-La Crosse.
Dance groups from across the community showed off their skills while instructors taught beginners new moves. The event included a raffle and tables that displayed area resources.
Organizers said there is a stigma that makes talking about suicide difficult.
“We wanted to bring it out in the open because the problem with suicide or even mental health; it’s not talked about, it’s taboo. Yet it’s the same as any other disease It’s a brain disorder,” said Suicide Prevention Initiative board member Debra Mahr.
All donations and proceeds will go directly to the La Crosse Area Suicide Prevention Initiative.
