Crews fight grass fire, strong wind gusts in Monroe County
Cause of fire under investigation
MONROE COUNTY, Wis. (WKBT) — The Sparta Area Fire District responded to a grass fire near Dallas Avenue and Highway 27 just north of Sparta Wednesday afternoon.
The call came in at about 2 p.m. When Fire Chief Mike Arnold arrived on scene, a barn on the land was on fire, but crews were able to save the building.
About 50 people from the Sparta Area Fire District and the Wisconsin DNR helped fight the fire. Chief Arnold said crews did a back-burn to try to contain the fire. The DNR brought in digging machines and dug a 50-foot trench and then started wetting down that area.
Winds were between 20-30 mph with 40 mph gusts when crews battled the fire. That made it difficult for crews to try to contain the fire. Chief Arnold said they were concerned the fire would jump over Dallas Avenue, so the main objective was to keep the fire contained to one side of the road. Crews were successful.
Chief Arnold said they will have to keep a close eye on the situation due to strong winds.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
