Crews fight basement fire in La Crosse

The American Red Cross is helping people displaced by a basement fire at a house on George Street.

The La Crosse Fire Department responded to 2012 George Street at about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the basement of the home. Everyone was able to get out safe.

Crews found a fire in a wall and ceiling. They put it out and removed the smoke from the basement and the first floor of the home.

One firefighter reported a knee injury from a fall on the ice.

The La Crosse Fire Department Investigation Bureau is investigating the cause of the fire.

The La Crosse Police Department helped shelter the people who lived in the house to keep them safe from the frigid temperatures.
