Crawford County reports two motorcycle crashes, one fatal
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — An Iowa man died and a Racine man was injured Saturday in a pair of motorcycle crashes in Crawford County, according to authorities.
Richard A. Baumgartner, 62, Waukon, Iowa, died Saturday after crashing a motorcycle Saturday in the town of Freeman, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
Police were called to the crash at 4:29 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Hwy. 35 and Old Highway 35.
Investigators say Baumgartner was traveling south on Old Highway 35 on his 2011 Harley Davidson Trike motorcycle when he failed to stop at the stop sign, struck the curb and left shoulder of the highway, then rolled twice. Baumgartner, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle onto the southbound lane of Hwy. 35.
The motorcycle landed on the west shoulder of the highway.
Lifesaving measures were attempted; however, Baumgartner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Randal D. Steger, 69, Racine, Wis., was injured at a crash at about 11 a.m. Saturday in Soldiers Grove, Wis., according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
Steger was traveling east on Hwy. C on his 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he failed to navigate a sharp curve, tipped it onto its left side and slid onto the right shoulder. He was taken to Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua to be checked for injuries.
