COVID-19 vaccine arrives at Gundersen Health System
Hospital staff could receive the vaccine as early as Tuesday afternoon
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- Gundersen Health System has received its first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The State Patrol escorted a couple boxes of the Pfizer vaccine to the La Crosse hospital Monday afternoon. It was received by a Gundersen pharmacist and put into cold storage.
A spokeswoman tells News 8 Now the hospital has been preparing for this delivery for weeks; answering staff questions and planning how to distribute it. Gundersen could start vaccinating staff as early as Tuesday afternoon. Staff who’ve been caring for COVID-19 patients are eager to roll up their sleeves. “The opportunity to interrupt the transmission of this virus in the community and stop some of those large outbreaks where there is more morbidity and mortality, is where as healthcare workers we can make a difference .”, explains administrator of infection control Bridget Pfaff.
According to the State Department of Health Services, Wisconsin will receive close to 85-thousand doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 100-thousand doses of the Moderna vaccine. About 10-thousand have already been administered.
