Coping with grief over the holidays

Many people look forward to the holidays, but for some, it’s a difficult time of year.

Dealing with grief over the holidays is hard.

While everyone around you is cheerful, your heart is heavy, but experts say there are ways to cope.

Reach out to people rather than isolating yourself. Tell them what you need.

Try starting a new tradition to celebrate the person you lost.

Take time to care for yourself, and acknowledge your emotions instead of pushing them out.

“Take little breaks throughout the holiday season to check in with yourself. Realize that everyone handles grief and loss in a different way, and how we’re handling it is okay,” said Karen Hall, Psychotherapist, Mayo Clinic Health System.

If you know someone who is having a tough time, reach out to them.
